LED exclusive interview with ZEDD

LED had the opportunity to interview the awesome German producer ZEDD after his crazy wild show at LED's party at Voyeur last night. Without further ado, here are some answers for the curious and inquiring minds out there:

LED: You first got into music by playing the piano…but what was it that inspired you to start making tracks of your own?

Zedd: Well I consider myself a producer first and one of the electronic groups that I first heard was Justice…that pretty much set the bar for me. After that I got into Daft Punk and Deadmau5, who have both been such an inspiration. Then I entered into a contest on Beatport and from there things have just really been taking off.

LED: You’ve been on the road this summer with Skrillex & Porter Robinson on the Owsla tour. What has been the craziest experience for you so far?

Zedd: We did this really sick “glam shot”…we had an off day and were in this random city on the road and stopped at a mall. Skrillex tweeted about us being there, and all of a sudden a bunch of people showed up and it just got crazy. It was definitely a ridiculous experience.

LED: If life hadn’t called you to make music, what else do you think you'd be doing right now?

Zedd: That’s a tough question, because music is my passion, and I really can’t see myself doing anything else. But if it came down to it, I think I’d be a music teacher…giving back to the people. It’s all about following your dreams, and music is mine.

LED: Who are the artists that influence you most? Are there any "off the radar" DJs who you look up to?

Zedd: It’s hard for me to break it down, but I’m really into Alesso right now…he’s putting out some great stuff.

LED: What are you most excited about coming up in the next year?

Zedd: I’d really love to take some time off to produce my music, maybe rent a studio in LA and put out some of the tracks that I’ve been working on…I have a few in the works that still need some vocals, but they’re going to be sick. Also, there's the potential for me to do a show with deadmau5, Porter Robinson and some other guys…so that would be really dope. I’m just so thankful to be doing what I’m doing and I have a feeling that these next few months are going to be crazy.

LED exclusive interview with Porter Robinson

Porter Robinson, the 18-year-old musical mastermind from North Carolina, took some time to talk to us after his killer set at Voyeur on 6/16. Check out what he had to say…

LED: How was it that you were initially exposed to EDM and what inspired you to start creating your own tracks?

Porter Robinson: Well I pretty much have the unsexiest story of how I came into it. When I was 12 my brother brought home a copy of the video game Dance Dance Revolution. The score was composed of Japanese Electronic tracks, and at that age I thought it was super dope. So my parents bought me a mini keyboard…and that didn’t really allow me to do much. So over the next 6 years I learned how to make music on the computer. I got my first record contract when I was 15 and since then the genre has been so rapidly developing and I’ve just molded myself into it.

LED: LED: Who are some are the artists that you draw the most inspiration from?

PR: I’m a big fan of Wolfgang Gartner. He operates on a realm of consciousness that’s completely separate from ours. No matter how hard you try you can never be as good as he is. Another is the Dutch House group Noisia, they put out a lot of good drum and bass. Also there’s Brian Transau aka BT who did a lot of work on the soundtrack for Fast & Furious. Essentially I really appreciate guys who just bust their ass to put out music that’s incredibly detailed and interesting.

LED: LED: Given all of your success and the fact that you’re from a college town, is there still a lot of pressure on you to further your academic career?

PR: Well both of my parents went to UNC, so I kind of grew up always thinking I’d go there.

LED: LED: So would you say that UNC is your “dream school”?

PR: I always viewed getting accepted as an accomplishment, a way for me to know I had options but also have the choice to do whatever I wanted. I did apply for this coming Fall semester and got in, but I’ll be deferring for at least a year.

LED: LED: How do your parents feel about you skipping out on their alma matter to pursue your music?

PR: They’re totally supportive. My dad is a lawyer so he’s been really instrumental in helping me with contracts and stuff like that. And my mom always makes sure everything is taken care of before I go on tour…she still even makes sure I’ve packed my toothbrush. I just don’t want to look back when I’m 60 and regret missing out on the opportunities for success that are in front of me right now.

LED: LED: You’ll be performing a lot with Skrillex this summer, how was it that you guys initially got hooked up?

PR: The last 3 tracks I played here tonight are going to be released as an EP on Skrillex’s upcoming label called Owsla and we’re about to start a 30 day bus tour with Zedd called Owsla Summer Tour (earlier this year we also collaborated for the Project Blue Book tour with Tommy Lee and DJ Aero). Originally though, my manager Aaron was the one who introduced us to each other’s music. He booked Skrillex’s first gig at the same place I had mine (Motiv in Santa Cruz, CA). When he got in the car Aaron put in a CD of some of my stuff, he dug it, and we started chatting…he sent me an early version of "Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites" that at that time had some different vocals that the final edit. It was really just an organic process of us getting to know one another.

LED: LED: This summer you’re going to be playing at quite a few festivals, including EDC next weekend. Which one are you most stoked on?

PR: Well, I don’t like to play favorites…but I am really really REALLY excited about EDC. I see the Vegas EDC as being the “main” one, so it’s really awesome that I get to be a part of that. I love playing at smaller clubs in smaller towns [although I do LOVE playing here in San Diego] because there’s so much pent up energy due to the fact that it’s not every day that they have talent coming through and playing for them. But EDC is going to be incredible.

LED: LED: Have your experiences as an artist still allowed you to appreciate the quintessential high school experience: going to football games, having kickbacks with friends, wreaking havoc around your neighborhood, etc?

PR: Well I went to a small charter highschool, so we didn’t even really have a football team and for the first 3 years of high school I was making music but I wasn’t touring so I still got to hang with my friends and I wouldn’t ever want to miss out on fun times with them.

LED: LED: What do you expect to see in the years to come?

PR: I think traditionally we have seen songs with filthy, gnarly drops…and of course that’s dope but after a while the same stuff becomes redundant. I think we’re going to see more songs that shock the audience, at least that’s what I’m all about. Now with more and more digital DJing some of the constraints of the past are being illuminated and I think we’re going to see songs with a variety of different tempos. And also even some more styles of EDM, recently there’s been Moombahton with its heavy Latin influences which I’m really into right now.

LED Exclusive Interview with Mr. White

Chris White, AKA Mr. White, and also commonly known as "Dreamboat" here at LED took some time for an exclusive interview with us before he killed it this past Thursday night at Voyeur.

LED: When was it that you realized that you wanted to become a DJ...when did you decide, "this is the shit I want to do"?

Mr. White: I saw a documentary about DJing called Scratch and 2 weeks later I dropped out of college (Cal State).

LED: What other artists influence you?

Mr. White: DJ AM, Laidback Luke, Aoki

LED: What has been the craziest DJ moment for you?

Mr. White: I was playing a show in Chicago and there was a girl in front of the DJ booth trying to throw her panties on stage. As she was attempting to remove them she threw up on herself....I guess you really had to be there to understand, but it was pretty crazy.

LED: What has been your favorite venue to play at?

Mr. White: I throw the party every Friday at Avalon and I also have a residency with Voyeur, so for me both places are like home.

LED: Which do you prefer...the Voyeur bottle service girls or the LED wall dancers?

Mr. White: Duh, that's easy...the bottle service girls.

Wolfgang Gartner Reveals Collabo With Deadmau5, More To Come

By Lara Kathleen Kelley | MTV.com

House hitmaker riding high after awards nods, epic Lollapalooza set and working with Tiësto and Will.I.Am.

Is electro-house producer Wolfgang Gartner up next for a Deadmau5-like surge in popularity?

Well, consider this: Gartner's newest single with British house-music producer Mark Knight, "Conscindo," held the #1 spot on Beatport's dance-music charts for two weeks in July, and in the past two years, he's had eight other tracks make it to the top, including Beatport's best-selling track of 2009, "Wolfgang's 5th Symphony."

Then there's his awards nominations: He was nominated in the DJ Awards' Best Newcomer category and also made the top-100 list for America's Best DJ. Voting is under way for both.

Gartner has remixed everyone from Britney Spears to Timbaland and Black Eyed Peas and is currently working with Tiësto, Will.I.Am and Kaskade on separate forthcoming releases. His most recent accolade is his conquering of the dance stage at Lollapalooza last weekend, where he also rocked the Undocumented afterparty at Vision Nightclub in Chicago.

"In one word: amazing," Gartner told MTV News on Wednesday (August 11) of his Lollapalooza experience. "And, to be honest, the most fun I've ever had playing in Chicago. [The afterparty] with Felix Cartal and JFK from MSTRKRFT, who are both under the same management as me, was kinda like a family-type vibe. A lot of friends were there, and I also love hearing those guys play, so it was cool in so many ways."

When describing his newest #1 single, "Conscindo," Gartner said the collaboration was fun, but not easy. "It was a bit of a pain in the ass for Mark Knight, because he had to fly out to my studio in Austin [Texas] to work on it a multiple of times, so I felt bad for him!" he said. "Collaborations are a weird thing for me. I never really realize what we have until a couple weeks after it's over, the track has been sitting around for a while, and then it's like I suddenly have perspective on it and hear it for what it really is. When that moment came for 'Conscindo,' I knew exactly what we had on our hands. It sat at #1 on Beatport for about two weeks, so now we're kicking around the idea of turning it into a vocal track and going for round two with it."

At age 11, Gartner was inspired to begin making music after hearing a mixtape by Detroit techno producer Kevin Saunderson. Gartner said he would lock himself in his room and produce songs on drum machines and keyboards. A few years later, he got decks and a mixer and began spinning at underground parties and nightclubs.

Earlier this summer, Gartner told MTV News about his musical style and how he got started. "It's basically electro-house," he said about the type of dance music he produces. "But I kind of go through all different forms of house music, because that's what I was brought up on. Beyond that, I've got influences from rock and disco and all over the place put together in a dance format. I'm just trying to push boundaries and be forward-thinking.

"When I [first] got into it, I was more on the production end of things," he added. "I just wanted to make this music and listen to it. But then I started realizing this whole other side to it — the DJ side — and I wanted to be a part of that too and learn how to DJ. It kind of organically happened that way."

His newest release, "Undertaker," is a dark and sinister house anthem that sounds like an homage to Deamau5's hit "Ghosts n' Stuff," so it's only fitting that Gartner had some exciting news to share with us: "I just did a track with Deadmau5 that should be out in the next couple of months, which I'm really happy with. It was a really fun one. And there are a couple other collaborations that aren't done yet, so I shouldn't mention them just in case, ya know, they never get finished!"

Wolfgang Gartner is headlining Control at Avalon Nightclub in Hollywood on Friday and is scheduled to play the Electric Zoo festival in New York on Labor Day weekend.
